York Regional Police (YRP) officers hit the court on April 4 for the 13th Annual Charity Basketball Game in honour of Davis Ahlowalia, an officer killed in a motor vehicle collision in 2007.
Officers competed against the St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School senior boys’ and girls’ basketball team. The event has raised more than $20,000 to date to support orphans in Jamaica, a cause important to Ahlowalia.
“This tradition continues to be very special to members of YRP,” Chief Eric Jolliffe says. “It’s important for us to honour Davis’ memory in a meaningful way and this cause was very close to his heart.”
Ahlowalia travelled to Jamaica or India each year to work with impoverished families and those stricken by HIV/AIDS. He was also the driving force behind a campaign to raise money for a Jamaican orphanage. To make donations to YRP c/o Adopt a Mission, contact Sgt. Paul Chiang at 905-895-1221, ext. 7986.
