From taking part in Curbside Giveaway days to trading unwanted items for something else, York Region is promoting a host of waste-reducing activities during National Waste Reduction Week, which runs from Oct. 15 to 21.
Waste Reduction Week in Canada is a year-round program focused solely on the principles of circular economy, resource efficiency and waste reduction. The circular economy is more than just recycling – it’s about keeping products and materials at their highest utility and value throughout their life cycle and recirculating them at the end of their life. Compare that to a linear economy: a ‘take, make and dispose’ model that until recently has been used in product design and business models across the globe, Recycling Council of Ontario explains.
According to recent reports, York has achieved 93 per cent diversion from landfill and it remains focused on pushing diversion rates to new heights. There are many ways to participate in waste reduction initiatives across the region. Start by visiting york.ca/sm4rtliving to learn about reuse, recycling and disposal options for unwanted items.
BUNZ. York has partnered with BUNZ.com to offer a community-based app helping people trade their unwanted items for something else. Bunz has created a customized collection page, #yrcurbalert, to make it easier for York residents to search for items in their area. By downloading the free BUNZ app members can post things they no longer want in exchange for other items. The main rule of Bunz is no money exchanged – much like the simpler times of trading and bartering. Trades can involve clothes, furniture, handmade items, sewing services and more.
Curbside Giveaway. On Saturday, Oct. 20, York residents can participate in the Curbside Giveaway Day by placing unwanted items labelled FREE at the curb for others in the community to browse and take for their own use, free of charge. By using the Bunz app with #yrcurbalert you can help others find your stuff as well as help you find something too! Visit york.ca/yrcurbalert for dates in your city of town.
#yrcurbalert contest. As part of Curbside Giveaway Day, York is hosting a contest. Take a picture of your item and post it on York Region’s Curbside Giveaway event page on Facebook and use the hashtags #yrcurbalert and #contest to be automatically entered. Entries will be eligible for a random draw.
Remember to be safe and follow when swapping, buying or selling items online with these and other tips from York Regional Police:
• Always meet in a public place, preferably during the day. Take someone with you if you can and try to find a location that has security cameras for extra protection.
• If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Ask a lot of questions and properly inspect items before turning over your hard-earned money.
