Markham Carnival embraces community harmony

It’s carnival season in Markham.

The Markham Carnival, jointly hosted by the Markham Wesley Centre (MWC) and the Markham Peoples Community Church, will take place on Saturday, July 27.

The carnival takes place at the church and community centre, located at 22 Esna Park Drive in Markham. The organizer’s goal is to raise $150,000 this year.

“As our carnival ‘Embracing Community Harmony’ suggests, the Markham Carnival celebrates cultural diversity in our community,” said Polly Leung, program coordinator of MWC. “We are planning an international food fair, performances by various ethnic and cultural groups, games for all age groups, sporting games (pickle ball and table tennis) and basketball tournaments.

The MWC is raising funds to provide program development and service support for children, youth groups and adults in Markham and its neighbouring cities. In operation for over three years, the MWC has seen its memberships increase steadily from 500 in 2015 to over 2000 people.

It regularly hosts a variety of social, cultural, educational and health-related training programs. These include exercise classes for seniors, adult Tai Chi and martial arts classes, piano lessons, calligraphy classes, language training (English, Mandarin, Japanese, etc) and an array of computer training programs.

The latter includes desktop computer assembly, Android APP Inventor training, web site design, tablet and smartphone usage, Window 10 application usage and Arduino project development for electronics. The centre is also hosting a summer camp for children five to 12 years of age.

The Markham Wesley Centre is a non-profit organization which relies heavily on donations and support to sustain its programs and services. The 18,000 sq. ft. community hub is located at 22 Esna Park Drive, Markham.

The centre was established through an initial donation from the Markham Peoples Community Church and substantial funding from the Community Capital Fund of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. It is equipped with spacious activity rooms, multi-function halls, classrooms, and a gymnasium with basketball, volleyball, pickle ball and badminton court facilities.

The Markham Peoples Community Church (MPCC) is focused on four major missionary objectives which include “to love God and love others, to care for our community, to renew our lives and to be united in mission.”

The MPCC completed the expansion project that provides a new sanctuary of 785 seats and various rooms for children, youth and adults. The expansion has created a 25,000 sq. ft. worship facility, with the addition of 500 parking spaces.
