Man seriously injured in fail-to-remain collision

A pedestrian from Toronto suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck in Vaughan early New Year’s Day by a suspect driver who reportedly fled the scene after getting out his vehicle and seeing the victim lying on the sidewalk.

The incident took place Tuesday, Jan. 1 at about 3:20 a.m. near Jane Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The victim, a 50-year-old man, was taken to hospital, York Regional Police report.

The suspect is described as white, 30 to 40 years old, with short dark hair and a partial beard. He was wearing a dark-coloured zip-up hoodie with jeans and was driving a small SUV. After seeing the victim, he returned to his vehicle, pulled a U-turn and drove away north on Jane Street.

Investigators would like to speak with any witnesses who haven’t yet spoken with police, anyone who was driving in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage, and anyone who has noticed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description with fresh, front-end damage consistent with striking a person.
