Markham celebrates Earth Day

Markham residents are invited to help celebrate Earth Day on April 27. The festivities include activities for the whole family, including free carousel rides, electric-vehicle test driving, a sustainability fair, wildlife conservation displays, an eco-craft zone and face –to-face painting.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated with various events held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The City of Markham has done their part in demonstrating that support.

As one of the first municipalities to own rooftop solar assets in Ontario, 1.83 megawatts of solar energy is generated across the city. That’s equivalent to powering 245 homes per year while offsetting 117 tonnes of carbon emissions, the same as taking 21 cars off the road.

In 2016, Markham partnered with the David Suzuki Foundation to become the first Monarch-butterfly friendly city in Canada.

The Milk Bag Program has diverted more than two million milks bags from landfill since 2012. In 2017, an innovative textile recycling program has since diverted more than three million pounds from the waste stream. A partnership with the Lions Club to collect e-waste during Earth Day celebrations saw six tonnes of electronics collected for recycling in one day.

“The City of Markham is proud to be a municipal leader in sustainability,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We are committed to fighting climate change and reducing our carbon footprint. Join us for Markham’s Earth Day celebration to learn more about all the environmental services we continue to provide. Together, we can create awareness and make a difference. We are thinking locally and acting globally. This is a perfect time to reflect on how we can protect our planet, connect with nature and celebrate the beauty that surrounds us.”

The Earth Day celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 27 at 169 Enterprise Boulevard in downtown Markham.
