Markham graduate earns perfect average

A Markham District High School student who earned a perfect average is among the York Region District School Board’s top scholars, all of whom are being recognized for their “commitment and perseverance.”

Shirley Yilin Ren finished the 2019-20 academic year with a 100-per-cent average. Arthur Chen of Markville Secondary School and Venus Zimeng Yang of Milliken Mills Secondary School, both in Markham, each earned an average of 99.8 per cent.

The following International Baccalaureate (IB) students from Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill also completed the academic year with a 100-per-cent average: Jennifer Xi Chen, Rachel Yiyi Chen, Matthew Hon Fai Ling, Ian Tong (Tom) Pan, Guan Xiong Alan Qiao, Xinrong (Alex) Qiu, Eric Meng Shen, Aaron Zhang and Daniel Zhuang.

The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.

“We are very proud of these students’ achievements,” Board Chair Juanita Nathan said. “Their dedication to their studies has served them well and will continue to do so as they navigate the next chapter of their life.”

“These students are demonstrating what commitment and perseverance can do,” says Director of Education Louise Sirisko said. “We look forward to hearing about their continued successes, both academically and professionally.”
