Canada’s basketball program has some back-court help from York Region.
Both Andrew Nembhard of Aurora and Newmarket’s Kevin Pangos have been selected to Team Canada’s final roster for the upcoming 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.
The duo were part of the initial camp, working out in Toronto before playing a pair of exhibition games against Nigeria and then flying to Australia for more competition.
Nembhard, who went to Vaughan Secondary for two years before attending a prep program in Florida, was considering leaving leaving the Florida Gators after his freshman year to enter the NBA Draft, but will be back for his sophomore season following the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Pangos, who was an OFSAA silver medalist with Dr. Denison Secondary in Newmarket, played at Gonzaga before signing in Europe, where he currently suits up for FC Barcelona.
Canada opens up the World Cup on Sunday, September 1 against Australia.
