New suspension bridge connects city to nature

The Rouge River Suspension Bridge is now open, offering residents and visitors a complete trail system from the heart of Unionville to Markham Village.

Built in the heart of Milne Dame Conservation Park with minimal impact to its surroundings, the bridge is celebrated by the City of Markham as a leading example of modern engineering.

“This marks a milestone in our plan to connect you to nature and to the places you want to be,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “At the City of Markham, we are committed to creating pathways and links that promote healthy and green living.”

The bridge is an important link in the four-phase Markham Rouge Valley Trail System, which will eventually become part of the Lake-to-Lake trail system linking Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario. It was built with funding from the City of Markham, York Region and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario.
