Outstanding volunteers, businesses, more recognized

Markham Fair, Canada’s largest four-day fair, marked its 175th anniversary this year – one of several community milestones celebrated at the Markham Accessibility Awards & Community Recognition Night.

Other milestone anniversaries recognized at the event: Unionville Curling Club (100th anniversary), Unionville Festival (50th anniversary), Markham Greek Festival (30th anniversary) and Evergreen Hospice (30th anniversary).

The Markham Accessibility Awards recognize the outstanding contributions of businesses, public institutions and individuals who are champions for accessibility. Award recipients in the Business and Not-For-Profit category were Wayne’s Cup, SKIP (Special Kin Inspiration Program), Unionville Milliken Soccer Club Special Olympics and Steer Friends Day Program.

Dr. Mishra has received numerous volunteer awards and received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the Governor-General in 2018.

Award recipients in the Individuals Providing Support category are Andrea Haefele, Tina Morra, Anjali Vyas, Alana Aird and Liana Williams. Award recipients in the Individual Award category are Kristen Hayes, Dr. Faisel Saeed and Jordyn Sunn.

The Community Recognition Awards were also presented the same evening to outstanding volunteers, community organizations, musicians, athletes and scholars. Dr. Devendra Mishra and David Steeves received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, Antian Jiang received the Excellence in Music award and Lauren Castelino received the Corporate Knights – Top 30 Under 30 award.

Community Recognition Awards also went to the Thornhill Community Hockey League’s Julian Herzberg, Markham Sports League: L-Game, Markham FC’s 2005 Girls OPDL Team, 2019 Canadian Women’s FIFA World Cup’s Jayde Riviere, Canadian Olympic Badminton’s Brian Yang, Senior Ballroom Dancing Champions Agnes Yuan and Horace Hu, 2018 Junior Olympic Sport Stacking’s Rithika Jeristus, and Markham Taekwondo.
