Police seize $4.7 million in illegal cannabis

Three people face several charges following the seizure of $4.7 million worth of illegal cannabis connected with a grow operation operated by organized crime.

York Regional Police seized 2,360 plants and about 10 pounds of dried, ready-for-packing marijuana after executing a Cannabis Act Warrant in King Township on Friday, Sept. 27.

Police began investigating a suspected illegal outdoor marijuana grow operation on Hwy. 11 in July. They learned a licence obtained through Health Canada allowed for 475 outdoor plants and 124 indoor plants at one time.

Rongchi Tan, 56, of Oshawa, Rui Min Zhen, 31, of King Township, and Chang Jie Yu, 44, of Markham are each charged with producing cannabis and possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.
