Fall is the best time to plant trees as the weather allows them to properly develop their root systems, which promotes a stronger growth period when spring arrives. Town of Newmarket wants residents to take advantage of the Local Enhancement & Appreciation Forests’ (LEAF) Tree Planting Rebate Program. This program was developed as a thank you to residents for supporting the Town’s stormwater management program and will offer residents a $100 rebate when they plant a LEAF tree in their yard. Full service or Do-it-Yourself options are available by LEAF.
“Environmental Stewardship is one of Council’s Strategic Priorities. We as a community are committed to combating climate change and reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions through environmental initiatives such as this tree planting partnership with LEAF.” says Mayor, John Taylor. “Your participation in this program will help increase the Town’s tree canopy, divert approximately 36,000 litres of stormwater runoff, and protect the environment from pollutants that enter our waterways.”
On average, one tree can reduce a property’s stormwater runoff by 720 litres. Beyond stormwater management benefits, trees remove pollutants from the air, reduce residents’ energy and water usage and beautify our community. Trees also intercept rainfall, decrease stormwater runoff and increase the ability for water to soak into the ground.
Planting more trees can also reduce water and energy use, making household’s more environmentally friendly while reducing household costs, as well as creating habitats for animals, including song birds, native bees and butterflies.
Rebates are issued on a first-come-first-served basis due to limited supply. Learn more and apply online today at yourleaf.org.
