Victim identified in Colter Street shooting

Police have identified the man gunned down outside a home in Newmarket and continue to look for a dark-coloured sedan in which the suspects reportedly fled the scene.

A 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were shot in front of a home on Colter Street near Yonge Street and Mulock Drive on Friday, Oct. 4 around 9 p.m. while sitting in a car parked in the driveway, York Regional Police report.

DeShane Taylor of Toronto succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe two men exited a dark-coloured, four-door sedan and shot the victims before driving away from the scene. One of the suspects was wearing a dark-coloured shirt.

Investigators would like to speak to the occupants of a vehicle that drove past the scene at the time of the shooting. Police continue to canvass the area for video surveillance and are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything or drivers who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the shooting to contact the Homicide Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865.
