Woman knocked to ground in distraction theft

Police are on the hunt for a man and a woman in a Chrysler sedan who reportedly stole a woman’s necklace after stopping her to ask for directions.

The 74-year-old victim was walking on John Bowser Crescent near Davis Drive West and Eagle Street West in Newmarket on Friday, Jan. 11 shortly after 2 p.m., according to York Regional Police.

A black, four-door sedan with two occupants approached the woman and asked for directions to the hospital. They began showing her jewellery and while asking her if she wanted a gift, one of the occupants removed the victim’s necklace and also tried to steal her bracelets. The victim suffered minor injuries after being knocked to the ground as the suspects drove away.

The first suspect is described as a white male, aged 30 to 40 years with blond hair. The second suspect is described as a white female, aged 50 to 55 years with blond, straight, shoulder-length hair. Both spoke Farsi. The suspect vehicle is a Chrysler 300 or 400 with a red interior.
